Surroundings

The local surfer town of Santa Teresa with bars, restaurants & surf shops

Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is considered the surf central of Nicoya, which is a peninsula off the north-eastern coast of Costa Rica that faces the Pacific Ocean. In Santa Teresa you have plenty of amazing local restaurants & bars as well as a pretty lively backpacker scene. The camp is only 10 minutes away by car, and the team make around 5 trips per week after the morning surf session and lunch. The team also make around 5 surf trips to the beach of Playa Hermosa for some free surfing in the evenings after the 5 weekly morning surf lessons. All the shuttle services the crew provide are free of charge.

Around the camp you have a little more peace and quiet, the surrounding jungle is not only filled with vibrantly coloured plants, but also plenty of wildlife, including the odd monkey that strolls through the garden. The jungle goes all the way down to the sands edge at the beach below the camp, roughly 5-10 minutes away on foot.

If you are flying into San José take into account that it is a 6-hour car trip to Surf House Costa Rica. We always recommend you stay an extra night in San José, then take our transfer service that picks you up Monday morning or take the bus at 06:00 or 14:00. If you have a rental car we recommend hitting the road in the morning.

Sunset Stroll
The white sand beach at Santa Teresa is kilometres long, and perfect to soak in the amazing Costa Rican sunsets. The view looking out over the pacific as the sun sinks behind the blue water is well worth checking out, and then you can head to one of the beachside bars for a cold, refreshing drink.

Pura Vida
‘Pure Life’ – the motto for Costa Rican lifestyle. It pretty much just means enjoy every aspect of life. A big part of Costa Rican culture is the food where this motto also plays a major role. The local dishes are well worth trying, especially the Gallo Pinto.

Sunset Yoga sessions on the beach

Surf House Costa Rica not only provides perfect surf lessons to cater to every skill level, an amazing camp, and delicious food, but also yoga courses. Yoga is a perfect way to relax and get into the holiday rhythm, stretch out those areas that you worked out in the surf, and improve your stability and balance both on land & on your surfboard.

Surfing and yoga go hand-in-hand with one another. Yoga improves your core strength which in turn improves stability when you are on your surfboard. You also improve shoulder strength and general fitness meaning paddling and the take-off become quicker and smoother. Another thing that improves is your ability to control your breathing which helps immensely with all the holding your breath when you're paddling out. You can also book massages at Surf Camp Costa Rica which is a perfect way to relax after long active day. 2 Yoga sessions are included in your stay per week, with each session taking about an hour.

Arrivals

Flights

We offer an extra service where we will find you the cheapest available flight, then contact you with the final offer. Flights to San José are the best option when travelling to Surf Camp House Costa Rica. When the flights are booked and finalised we can organise an airport transfer to come and meet you at the airport, and take you to the Surf House.

San José - (SJO)

If you would like to organise your own flights we recommend using Skyscanner to give you a good overview of the available flights. Iberia, British Airways and Lufthansa are some of the airlines that fly to San José directly, with many more making stops in the USA. If you choose to fly to San José we recommend booking an extra night on arrival as the trip to and from the camp takes around 6 hours.

Tambor - (TMU)

The faster, but more expensive option is to continue on after you’ve landed in San José and fly to Tambor. Nature Air, a local airline makes the trips regularly. From here you can take a taxi directly to the camp for around 50 USD.

Shuttle

Arrivals are only possible on Monday at Surf House Costa Rica, so the best option is to arrive in San José on Sunday. The team offer a shuttle service to pick you up and bring you to the Surf House. The shuttle costs 75€ per person, and includes accommodation for Sunday night in San José. This is by far the most relaxed way to start your surf holiday.

Public Transport

The cheapest way to get to the Surf House is on the bus. Before you make the trip we recommend spending a day in San José, exploring the city, then getting on the 06:00 bus the next morning.

  • The trip takes between 6 and 7 hours
  • The bus departs from “Atlántico Norte” Address: Calle 12 Av. 7 – 9, San José
  • They depart twice a day, at 06:00 and 14:00
  • The bus drives onto the ferry in Puntarenas
  • You will get a detailed description of the route when you buy the ticket
  • The price is 15 USD and can be paid in USD, or CRC. It includes the ferry ticket

If you are planning to take this option, make sure you check the Bus & Ferry websites before you depart.

Rental Car

Renting a car in Costa Rica can be a great way to get around, they are very cheap and a great way to undertake your own early morning surf trips. The best priced rental cars are available at Sunny Cars. Getting a rental car will allow you to spontaneously explore the coastline on your own accord, just don't forget your roof racks.

We still recommend spending a night in San José before undertaking the 6 hour car trip to the Surf Camp. Making the trip during the day after a good nights sleep is much more fun that at night, after a long flight. Also, if it is within your budget, getting a 4x4 is a good idea, it will open up a lot more terrain to explore.
