Our luxurious partner lodge in the famous town of Jefferies Bay in South Africa has accommodation options to suit every type of traveller, from budget backpacker to honeymooners. The large building also has plenty of communal areas including a pool, large balcony with ocean views, Jacuzzi, cosy lounge with fireplace and a well-equipped kitchen that is there for guests and crew to use. The town of J-Bay
J-Bay is an international icon of modern surfing culture. It has been developing exponentially since Mike Hynson & Robert August where filmed surfing a perfect right hand pointbreak here in the 60’s surf classic, ‘The Endless Summer’. Nowadays a town has developed around the famous pointbreak where you find surfers from all over the world relaxing in the chilled bars and cafés, shopping at the outlet surf stores or taking in the stunning views on safari.

When you are not in town, or surfing the perfect waves, just in front of the lodge you have a perfect white sand beach called Paradise Bay. As the name suggests, it’s a great spot to spend a lazy afternoon with a book, or just enjoying watching the surf.

The team have a car on hand all the time so they can get you to the best waves every day for the surf sessions, and if you are not taking part in the course you can come along, or check out other spots with a little help of the local crew. The spots are all around ten minutes away and are easy to get to in a rental car or with a local taxi or surf shuttle.

The surf industry jumped into the local scene pretty early and established a strong foundation. Now you will find all the major surf labels have a solid chunk or real estate where they setup outlet stores. If you decide to spend an afternoon shopping you can expect to can find anything from a new board, to a pair of shorts, and everything at unbeatable prices.

Pro-Surfers
While you are here it is well worth getting up early and checking out the pro’s practicing for upcoming competitions at one of the world’s best right handers. There are also plenty of competitions that take place here as well so it could be you get to see some of the world’s best surfers congregate there while you are enjoying a holiday.

For an easy, stress free holiday we have included the Basic Surf Course for all guest travelling to our partner camp in South Africa. The surf crew are all ISA qualified and all hold current Beach Lifeguard Qualifications meaning you will be having a great time in a controlled and safe environment.

The crew not only have more than the required qualifications, but they are also avid surfers who love the ocean with years of experience teaching and, most importantly, locals to the area. For an extra 20 € per week you can take part in the intermediate surf course that is suited to slightly more advanced surfers. You will get taken to different surf spots and the courses focus less on the basics like paddling, duck diving and getting up, and more on actual surfing, catching ‘green’ waves and maybe even starting to work on turns.

Description

J-Bay and its world famous right hand point break is known by every surfer around the world for good reason. J-Bay itself is made up of 7 different point breaks, as you work your way up the point the waves get bigger and more suited for advanced surfers, as well as a couple of mellow beach breaks.

Along the coast around J-Bay you also have endless surf spots, and with so much open space its very likely you will get waves with very few people out in the line-up. If you take part in a surf course you always have a board and wetsuit included, that you can also borrow from the team outside of the course times.

The team will get breakfast ready for you every morning during your stay at the lodge to get you charged up to go surf some world class waves. Breakfast is always varied and if you have any special wishes, let the team know and they can help you out.

Once a week in the evening the crew invite everyone for a Braai, which is an authentic South African BBQ. This is a great time to open a cold beer, share some surf stories, and maybe even head out to check out some of the local surf bars in town. The remainder of the time you can use the open plan kitchen as you like and cook dinner with other guests, or for yourself. You also have the option to go to one of the many restaurants nearby.

As word spread around the world about a magic right-hand point break in South Africa, almost all major surf labels decided they wanted an office by the action. After a few decades the scale has increased a little bit, and now you have all the major brands have a selection of shops, including at least one Outlet store each. These outlet stores have unbeatable prices, and sell everything from new surfboards to socks.

Even if you aren’t looking to go shopping, it’s well worth a look. If you really don’t want to go to the stores, just hanging out with the locals at the cafés & bars in J-Bay is a lot of fun. The locals always have a good joke on hand, and the view, and the cold drink, is a great way to spend an afternoon.

St. Francis Bay
Along the coast you have the harbour town of Cape St. Francis. The trip starts with a surf at the first spot the crew from the original Endless Summer surfed, where you find another perfect right-hand pointbreak. After your surf the crew will take you to the famous surfer hangout, Sunset Bar. Here you can enjoy the view, a cold drink, and a delicious meal.

Waterhole Trip
On the outskirts of J-Bay the crew know of a fun little waterhole. It’s a little drive and a little walk but you get to experience a little South African nature and also go for a swim if the conditions allow. You also get snacks & drinks along the way.

Schotia Safari
When you’re in South Africa it would be a tragedy not to spend at least one day out on Safari. The team from the lodge can organise a tour with a local Safari operator to take you out into the nearby national park so you can try get a glimpse of the big 5. The trip sets off in the early afternoon. You first take a tour through the nature reserve in the afternoon, then come back for an afternoon snack, then go back again. Once you get back in the evening dinner will be ready and you get to spend the night in a camp in the national park.

The area around J-Bay is full of things to see and do. The team in South Africa have put together a small list of things that they recommend you check out during your stay:

Surf Art Love Project
A community project supported by the Surf Lodge South Africa and all the crew that gets underprivileged local kids out in the water. You can go along to workshops where the kids create art that they sell to support their new found love of the ocean. The goal of selling the art along with the support from the lodge is to get even more kids from the area on a surfboard.

Bungee Jumping
Not far from the camp you will find the highest bridge Bungee in the world.

Sandboarding
There are Sand dunes nearby where we can take you to go try your hand at sandboarding.

J-Bay Skatepark
If you want to check out the local skate park just let the team know and they will wither go down with you or point you in the right direction.

Snorkelling
South Africa’s interesting wildlife doesn’t stop once you get into the water. All around the camp are great spots to snorkel and dive.

Kite Surfing
When the wind is blowing you can try your hand at Kite Boarding which a few operators offer in J-Bay.

We can help you look for flights if you wish. Otherwise we suggest looking at websites lie SkyScanner & Kayak to find the cheapest flights available.

The team at the camp can pick you up from Port Elizabeth Airport & bring you to the camp. The cost is 90 € per trip and is divided amongst the passengers.

After your booking is finalised send your flight details directly to the camp manager and he can organise the pick transfer with you, and let you know if any other guests are arriving at a similar time so you can share the costs.

If you choose to rent a car we recommend Sunny Cars, and getting a 4x4. It will make a whole lot more terrain accessible to you on your trip.

Directions:
Exit the airport and take the exit on the right. Once you are at the roundabout, turn left. At the first traffic lights turn right into Heugh Road, which you follow until you see the harbour. Once you get there turn left, then straight away stay right which leads you onto the N2, the motorway towards Cape Town. You stay on the N2 for around 70 km, exiting at the second Jefferies Bay Exit. Go straight through the first 2 roundabouts, then at eh 3rd you’ll see a Caltex Petrol Station. The team will meet you here and guide you the rest of the way to the Lodge.
