Playa Maderas & San Juan del Sur
Playa Maderas, which is located along the Southwest coast of Nicaragua, is a small, relaxed beachside town that is quickly becoming the hub of the local surf scene. The town has small, chilled beachside bars, restaurants & cafés for you to enjoy. The town is only a 9km away from the booming small city of San Juan del Sur where you can meet other surfers, yogis & world explorers who make the pilgrimage to the small city to enjoy the amazing nightlife, food, scenery and beach.
There are daily shuttles between the two towns, and San Juan del Sur is only 90 minutes away from Managua International Airport, making it a great spot to start or finish your holiday in Nicaragua.
Various tour operators out of San Juan del Surf offer Catamaran Tours of the Nicaraguan coast. The usual destination of these tours is a beautiful beach called Playa Blanca where you’ll have time to go for a walk, swim, and explore the surroundings. On the way you can fish for Mackerel and Tuna, which you can cook on-board if you get lucky. You might also spot a pod of Dolphins or the occasional Sea Turtle on the way.
If you want to explore the area around Playa Maderas on foot we recommend checking out the secret beach. It’s only accessible at low tide, so you have to time it well. To get there you walk north along the beach and keep walking. When you can’t walk any further you are there.
Partying in San Juan del Sur
There is a massive selection of bars & nightclubs in San Juan del Sur that are well worth checking out. The town attracts an abundance of super cool tourists including surfers, yogis & backpackers meaning the atmosphere is always super fun. The selection of bars & nightclubs ranges from Schick beachside bars with pools, to grungy dive bars, and the music can be anything from local Latin American beats, to international hits.

The town has plenty of small bars, restaurants and bars to explore in the evenings, and during the day you can find beautiful coves & secluded bays, as well as jungle trails with varied wildlife, including Monkeys and Iguanas. The best bet is to get on the beach and walk north between the cliffs and ocean.
There is also the option of going on a horse ride along the beach which we would recommend doing around sunset, not only is it cooler, but the view is also much more spectacular. There are also Yoga sessions available and it’s possible to rent motorbikes.
